Our Search and Rescue Dog Training

With more than a decade of specialized experience, our team builds dependable SAR partners for “live find” or human remains (HR) missions. Founder Scott Tarpley is a graduate of the Tom Rose School outside St. Louis and has trained fellow Army veteran and instructor Andrew Northup in these methods. Together, they coach dog–handler teams through a range of scenarios so you and your canine can be confident and ready to work when the program ends.

K9 Unlimited tailors each plan to your dog’s drive, age, and temperament, then layers real terrain, weather, and distractions to prepare you for operational call-outs. Read on to learn more about the different facets of our search-and-rescue dog training program.

Live-Find (Wilderness/Area Search)

Live-find teams focus on locating missing or lost persons using air-scenting, intelligent casting, and controlled range. We teach clear alert behaviors (including recall–re-find), systematic area coverage, and handler decision-making under changing winds and terrain.

Most teams complete the live-find track in about eight weeks, with field exercises that translate directly to real search deployments.

Human Remains Detection (HRD)

HRD teams are trained to recognize and pinpoint human decomposition odor across a variety of environments and training aids. We emphasize solid imprinting, source narrowing, and reliable passive indication under distraction.

The HRD track typically spans around sixteen weeks, building from fundamentals to complex, realistic problem sets.

Off-Lead & Operational Readiness

Effective canine SAR work demands confident off-lead control and clear communication at distance. This phase reinforces directional cues, obedience under stress, and safe movement through brush, water, structures, and various terrain. You’ll run full mock searches—day and night—practice briefings and debriefings, and leave with a training upkeep plan so performance stays sharp between missions.
